WH: Obama has demonstrated 'fiscal restraint'

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney insisted to reporters on Air Force One today that President Obama has "demonstrated significant fiscal restraint” and applied a “balanced approach.”

According to the pool report, Carney added that any reporting to the contrary, would just be the result of “sloth and laziness.” Carney cited an article by financial columnist Rex Nutting of MarketWatch, which was also cited by David Axelrod this morning on Twitter.

As AEI's Jim Pethokoukis writes, Nutting arrives at these numbers by assigning 2009 government spending to George W. Bush.

I'd really hate to see if he was acting without fiscal restraint

Olde-style, states' rights conservative. Ask if this concept confuses you.

No, he means that he's submitted three budgets and none of them have garnered any votes in either house, and the senate hasn't passed a budget in three years. No budget means fiscal restraint.

Well, $14.65 TRILLION dollars of debt says otherwise.

Where this all from the WH is coming from is from a "Market Watch" article.

    Obama spending binge never happened

    Rex Nutting

Commentary: Government outlays rising at slowest pace since 1950s

May 22, 2012|Rex Nutting, MarketWatch <-- Note the date.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Of all the falsehoods told about President Barack Obama, the biggest whopper is the one about his reckless spending spree.

    (...)

Although there was a big stimulus bill under Obama, federal spending is rising at the slowest pace since Dwight Eisenhower brought the Korean War to an end in the 1950s.

Even hapless Herbert Hoover managed to increase spending more than Obama has.

You can read the rest and its "Facts" your self. Its based on a chart produced by Pelosi last year as its source of hard facts.

Infact it sources almost all of '09 spending, including Porkulus 1 & 2, TARP 2, all on Bush's watch.

Then get past the obvious lies in that piece.

Next day, Tingles hops on PMSNBC and parrots it him self.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Not true. And the only problem with Republicans trying to paint President Obama as a reckless spender is it is not true at all. Market Watch point out that federal spending is rising at the slowest rate- In fact, look at it there since 1950. But take a look at that bar chart there. For four years, from fiscal year ’09 through fiscal year ’13, we are heading into, no change. It’s been about $3.5 trillion right through. You know, Joan, every once in a while I’m amazed because I have heard so much about how government federal spending has been spiking every year. And you look at the ad that Rove put out and you’d be lead to believe that every year it is ticking upward. It is incredibly flat, government spending, federal spending.
Now you have the WHs and a few other liberal rags all preaching the same. Problem. The facts dont back it up. And will burn them in the end.

Obama to Boehner: 'We Don't Have a Spending Problem'

In an interview with Stephen Moore of the Wall Street Journal, newly re-elected House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) opened up about President Obama’s utter unwillingness to cut a single dollar from federal spending. In a stunning admission, Obama reportedly told Boehner, “We don’t have a spending problem.”

Boehner added that President Obama continues to maintain that America’s federal deficit is caused not by governmental overspending but by “a health-care problem.” Said Boehner, “They blame all of the fiscal woes on our health-care system.” Boehner told Obama, “Clearly we have a health-care problem, which is about to get worse with Obamacare. But, Mr. President, we have a very serious spending problem.” Obama eventually replied, “I’m getting tired of hearing you say that.”

Obama may be tired of hearing Boehner talk about a spending problem, particularly when Obama has been re-elected on the basis of ignoring government spending. Nonetheless, America does have a spending problem, which Obama is steadfastly ignoring. “He’s so ideological himself,” Boehner explained, “and he’s unwilling to take on the left of his own party.” That’s why Obama refused to raise the retirement age for Medicare after agreeing to it. “He admitted in meetings that he couldn’t sell things to his own members,” said Boehner. “But he didn’t even want to try … We could never get him to step up.”
