Hamp, was there much coverage of this in the UK? It looks like old Neville Chamberlain's spirit still runs deep with some of the British police and pols. We have that same damned spirit here in the US. It's embarassing how everyone jumped the gun with Treyvon here in Florida. It's so funny down here now, as we don't hear much about the case. The liberal rag here in Sarasota even had an editorial a week or so ago admonishing all of us for being too quick to judge. (They were jumping all over poor George Zimmerman just shortly before the pics finally came out of all the damage that had been inflicted on him by that sweet little boy who looked just like Obama's son, if he had one).

I get what you are saying, but from the government's perspective, it should not be about religion. It should be about the fact that these men raped young women and girls. Let their lawyers spin whatever religious defence they want to try to spin. The law in Great Britain prescribes appropriate punishment for this offense and that is all that should matter.

The British have some messed up laws, though. Look at how many battles Scientology has won there, and what is considered libel. That's why our Constitution is so much better than their complicated system.

77 years each I hope. It reads like it could mean 77 years for all 9 of them. ie about 8+ years each.

The plain meaning of it is a grand total of 77 years for ALL the sentences COMBINED. Yep, that's the real travesty heaped on travesty here...over 600 rapes and they get sentences like a single count of armed felony would get in the US. EU sentences and prisons are a joke. There is a cultural problem on the Anglo end of this thing as well, the criminal justice system there will relentlessly pursue anyone who defends himself with force but practically apologizes to the thugs and career criminals for the occasional short sentences they receive during their lives of crime.

Agreed. It is however a real religion and that is the problem. Were it not for the protection we afford "deeply held (racist, sexist, homophobic, imperialistic, fascist, supremacist, violent...) beliefs" then we wouldn't be as handicapped in trying to prevent this infection from entering our culture and countries.

There was coverage for a while. Some of the mainstream pols tried to play it down, saying it was nothing to do with race. Interestingly they were undermined by a local politician from a 2nd generation Pakistani background saying that it definitely was a consequence of racial/cultural issues.
