5-time world boxing champion Johnny Tapia found dead in home

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – Johnny Tapia, the five-time boxing champion whose turbulent career was marked by cocaine addiction, alcohol, depression and run-ins with the law, was found dead Sunday at his Albuquerque home. He was 45.

Authorities were called to the house at about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, spokesman Robert Gibbs said. The death didn't appear to be suspicious, he said.

Tapia won five championships in three weight classes, winning the WBA bantamweight title, the IBF and WBO junior bantamweight titles and the IBF featherweight belt.

He was regarded as the consummate underdog by his fans. The more trouble he found outside the ring -- including several stints in jail -- the more they rallied around him.
Yeah a 45 year old athlete drops dead, nothing to see here, move along.

When they say not suspicious they mean no foul play. He was a coke head so it's more than likely he OD'd.

Tapia had a serious drug problem. Although the cause of death hasn't been officially determined, suspicions are that he OD'd.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - New Mexico boxing legend Johnny Tapia has died. He was just 45-years-old.

According to Albuquerque Police, officers were called out to his home Sunday evening, responding to reports that a man had been found dead.

A source close to the family confirmed that the man found was in fact Tapia.

Tapia was a five-time world boxing champion.

He has long battled a difficult and very public drug addiction, even spending some time in prison.

At this time it is unknown exactly how Tapia died.

APD says the cause of death will be determined after the Office of the Medical Investigator conducts an autopsy.
