    My own father was a self absorbed jerk. He died in 2009 and no one cared.

    But there was a substitute and model. I fear I will never be able to meet the level of the family that supported me when I had no one, and especially the head of that family. He's been gone for 30 years and I think of him still. His wife told me once that "Edgar would be pleased" with who I became. That thought brings tears.
