Our top story tonight: The Obama campaign has announced a bridal registry for persons seeking to forego wedding gifts in favor of contributions to the campaign. Here to explain this policy is Obama campaign spokesperson Tommy Flanagan.

Our pleasure. Is it true that the Obama campaign is actually setting up a registry for couples to solicit donations in lieu of gifts?

Oh, absolutely. Our polling indicates that there are lots of relatives of soon-to-be-married couples who would love to make a donation instead of picking out some bourgeois silverware or place settings. Why, the members of Democratic Underground alone are constantly whining about how many relatives they have who don't share their progressive views, and this provides them with the opportunity to really stick it to them and do a good deed at the same time. Our only regret is that we didn't think of this before Kwanzaa.

Besides, lots of same-sex couples wouldn't even be able to get married if it weren't for President Obama's courageous stand on gay marriage. The least that they can do is channel some of that wedding loot into the campaign.

I can't really believe this.
Is he that hard up for campaign cash that he is asking special occasion celebrants to have their gift givers hand over their hard earned cash to him?

It does make it easier figuring out which events to attend. If I get a request to donate to Obama instead of a gift, making their occasion a political statement instead of a celebration, I'll find something better to do like cleaning the dog pen.

The falloff has left his fund-raising totals running behind where they were at the same point in 2008 — though well ahead of Mr. Romney’s — and has induced growing concern among aides and supporters as they confront the prospect that Republicans and their “super PAC” allies will hold a substantial advantage this fall.
