Republicans from time to time have accused President Obama of playing identity politics. Here's the problem: The electorate remains confused about his identity.
The problem is most famously manifested in persistent conspiracy theories, driven by conspiracy-loving “birthers,” about Obama's birthplace and citizenship. But voters remain muddled about his religion as well, as a new Gallup poll confirms.
The poll released Friday shows that just 34% of Americans can identify Obama as a Christian or, more specifically, as a Protestant. Eleven percent remain convinced that he is Muslim, and 44% say they don't know.
That is striking, because few presidents have spoken and written as much about their faith as Obama. His Christianity, in fact, ignited the biggest controversy of his 2008 campaign when incendiary videos of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's longtime pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, went viral on the internet. Obama eventually severed ties with Wright, and since then has attended a variety of Christian churches. He uses Christian language and imagery often in speeches.

8. How do you draw that conclusion from this?Of course the FACT that Obama was raised as a Muslim, has said that the Muslim call to prayer is the "prettiest sound on earth", joined a black Liberation Theology church (which is not Christian even if they claim it is) only AFTER he was told that if he wanted to be in politics he should join a church and doesn't know the most basic facts about Christianity doesn't enter into people NOT BELIEVING his claim to be a Christian.OffWithTheirHeads (7,927 posts)
10. Simple. If you look at how many don't believe Obama is a Christian,
how many think he was born in Kenya, how many think he is a Muslem, how many think he is gonna get our guns, add infinitum, what else can you conclude? These folks didn't just all come up with these ideas out of a vacuume. They have been bombarded with propoganda and it is working. I could give a whole page of examples (and so could you) but let's just take the teabags. Millions of old, poor, white folks who think the 1% have their best interests in mind contrary to all rational evidence. They believe this shit because they are exposed to almost no information to the contrary. The Dems should be all over the lies like thunder and lightning but mostly we hear crickets. Where is the pushback?
Right. Like claiming that God expects us to "be our brothers keeper ". Most 10 year olds who are Christians can tell you that it was not GOD who said we should be our brother's keeper but Cain who in lying to God said that he didn't know where Abel was (after he killed him) because he WASN'T his brothers keeper. He uses Christian language and imagery often in speeches.
Just like spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to avoid showing his birth certificate and writing a biography for his publicist which was used for years and revised claiming he was born in Kenya DOESN'T enter into people not believing he was bornin the US. In fact it wasn't changed claiming he was born in the US until AFTER he started campaigning for the presidency.
And ummmm...... why should he be believed since the autobiography he supposedly wrote has been shown to have MANY, MANY lies and fabrications in it?
Any problems Obama has where there are claims that conservatives are ignorant, don't know the truth or are citing "propaganda" are of HIS OWN MAKING.
But to the libs he's their savior, they don't want to know the truth and so they drink the koolaid...and then claim that conservatives believe propaganda and are ignorant.
