Is it a decent computer that will last? My old Dell Latitude D510 is 7 years old, fan runs most of the time, is extremely slow and I keep getting a message that the battery is about gone.

I hate changing anything, why I guess that I keep a car for so long. If it's a brand that might blow up shortly after we get it, don't want it. I definitely need a new one, but don't need anything too special, as I mainly use it for word documents, emails and posting on CU. But I hate how extremely slow this thing is, have to wait forever for anything to load. I want to find a decent one at a low, low price.

Thanks, do you have any particular brands that you think are more reliable or some that you'd avoid like the plague?

I would avoid Compaq and HP for both desktops and laptops. HP laptops are beautiful till the GPU overheats and goes out. The CPU and the GPU are cooled by a single fan. Its been a design flaw for several of the later models (the earlier ones had smaller CPUs so it wasnt as much of a prob.) The DV series. DV4,5,6,7 .... Theyve had a few class action lawsuits because of it.

Some people feel similarly about the Toshibas. I have seen a few probs from customers too. But I must say I own a few and have been very lucky.

The Gateways both desktop and laptop are among the best I have seen. And I have a few of them too. Very nice. I havent seen any real issues with them either from the customers or from my own.

Some people say that Acer is problematic but I havent seen so much of that.

My favs would be Gateway, Toshiba and Acer ... in that order. Im sure Im leaving something out.

We could say they are spending like drunken sailors. That would be unfair to drunken sailors, they're spending their OWN money.

Keep it cool. And you should be alright. Heat, dust and lint (and sometimes animal hair, fur) are biggest enemies of laptops. It can add up over the years.
