Thread: Are you a dental coward?

1. Orajel only works the first day of pain. Your gums develop tolerance to it quickly. It's a substance that is similar to cocaine, back when doctors used cocaine as a topical anesthetic. When it stops working, gargle every 15-30 minutes with whiskey. It's your decision whether to swallow it or spit it out, but it will help with the infection.
2. If half your tooth falls out, sooner or later it is going to hurt. It's going to abcess and your gum will "bump out", as my dentist refers to the bump of pus that grows on your gum on the other side of the abcess. Dental abcesses are the second worst pain I have ever experienced, the worst being gall stone pain.
I hate going to the dentist, but it hurts more not to go. I have to get 4 cleanings a year, 2 from my dentist and 2 from the periodontist. I've had all the dental work done that I can short of having all my teeth pulled and getting dentures. I had orthodontics as a teen, I've had my wisdom teeth pulled and I had periodontal surgery. It all sucks, but the up side is that dentists can prescribe vicodin or tylenol 3s.

Managed to get an appt. for 9:30 this morning due to a cancellation, can you believe, the luck? Had x-rays and all the prodding and poking etc. done ... and now have an appt. with a specialist in "Endodontics" whatever that is ... to have a charming root canal done 3 days from now, in a nearby town.
And from there ... back to Mr. ABC's dentist again for crown work. Oh the joy of it all escapes me! At least new dentist has given me a prescription for Amoxycillin (who cares how I spelled it) to take care of the infection ... and tells me as soon as I have the root work done, the pain will go away!

Hopefully, you will never have to go through it again, noonie!

My biggest issue is the Novocaine doesn't last. They have to give me six shots of it before I even start to get numb, and that wears off pretty quick. I have very sensitive teeth. So the littlest things poking and prodding them hurt like crazy.

Needless to say, I threatened the anesthesiologist (anesthetist? I never can remember which is which) in the pre-surgical for my hip with hunting down her, her family, her family's family, her friends, people she barely remembered from high school, and all of the aforementioned's dogs, cats, hamsters, and goldfish and doling out the most horrible deaths imaginable if I had the same experience while they were sawing off the top of what remained of my femur. Fortunately, they managed to get it right when they were replacing my hip, so no one had to die unnecessarily.Olde-style, states' rights conservative. Ask if this concept confuses you.

Was thinking about you yesterday at the specialist's office while "white-knuckling" it in the chair, practically *inverted* ... strange position to be in for so long.
How beyond horrific for you. Ugh!
While my experience yesterday in no possible way, can equal yours, it was not so pleasant either.
Good old "Murphy's Law" kicked in and screwed up everything. She could not finish my appt. due to my tooth "erupting" ... will not go into the disgusting details.
So naturally, have to go back again in a couple of weeks time. I'd say about 50% of the pain has subsided however, thank goodness.
Is reason I came in this morning and posted the test in The Lounge. Still need to keep myself distracted.
Guess that subject should win in "The Lead Balloon Contest," huh? ...
Nevermind ... is time to dose myself with 2 more aspirins and a quick "whisky" swirl that noonie suggested ... which DOES indeed work to numb the gum!

To whom it may concern ...
This shameless attention whore that I have become lately ... being of still fogged mind, and sound body, do solemnly swear to not talk about my blinking dental problems anymore in here, or elsewhere in Conservative Underground.
Signed, this 3rd, day of August, in the Year of our Lord, 2012.

(Besides, I really don't have the time. Have a dinner party for 10 to prepare for, coming up one week from tomorrow. Have buckets of stuff to plan, shop for, etc.) ...American By Choice ~ 1980
