For women, romances are the equivalent of porn, in that they satisfy their fantasies. The average romance involves bridging an emotional divide to a distant, unattainable fantasy male whose deep, troubling secret can only overcome by the love of the heroine, and which he will reciprocate once the chasm is breached, making him into her soulmate.

Oh my! For teenage readers perhaps. Not too awfully sure about adult women.

Then again, what do I know about young adult women these days? ...

Have been married for donkey's years to Mr. ABC ... and back in the day didn't require such stuff to "titilate" women's sex lives.

That being said ... I do realize that men are quite "visual" as you posted (extremely *base* creatures that you all are!!!) ...

As for me ... I love reading detective/crime/thriller and espionage books! No porn for me!

My mother had a sister in law send her a box of books for her to read, as she knew my mom liked to read.

They were all sex filled romance novels.

My mom did not read them, simply kept them for a couple months and mailed them back.

One of my friends here was in the airport and had forgotten a book to read. She went to one of the airport shops and bought 50 Shades of Grey. She told me how boring it is. She asked how many times can you write the same thing over and over again.

What's funny is how shocked her adult daughter is that her mom is reading the same book. When she tried to discuss it, her daughter gave her the "oh, mom" routine, complete with the rolling eyes.

It couldn't be all that compelling, as it's been a month and she still hasn't finished the book. (and she's not a prude, but shocked me with the "been there, done that" comments.

I think Rob Johnson's picture captures the essence of it; books rather than pictures or films seem to be preferred by women. Women also favored the "Beauty" trilogy of Anne Rice's, which she wrote under a pseudonym. I tried reading that and was overwhelmed by boredom; I haven't tried 50 Shades of Grey, nor do I expect to.

I liked the AR Sleeping Beauty books, even though I recognize the stupidity in the plots. They are kind of mind-boggling in their detail, in that I would find myself thinking "can people really do that with other humans?". Good reading in at WTF kind of way.


I got 20 pages into 50 Shades and put it down because it was so incredibly boring. I didn't even get to anything sexual, another difference from AR's Sleeping Beauty books, which get down and dirty in the first chapter.

Really, though, the best erotic scenes that AR ever wrote involve sex with a demon in The Witching Hour.

Its not always the men hubie, some women go to pot after 15 20 years so some men find it hard (no pun intended) to get excited about them anymore. Maybe if they stepped up their game men would step up theirs

Okay. While I don't entirely agree with the whole "go to pot" thing, yes, both sides need to step up and work together. That's what my wife and I have been doing lately. We've been taking advice from a Christian radio show and turning our bedroom suite into a romantic refuge.
