I won't shop at our local Wal-Mart. Florida is a weird place (at least around Sarasota)---you can have decent housing and on the next street it looks like a slum. I guess that's why the HOA's are so big down here. The next street over used to have a homeowners association. They let it go. And the neighborhood went to hell.
The local paper carried the story of a woman shopping at the closest Wal-Mart to us. Some guy who rents a house in the dump area near us took her at knife-point to that house and held her prisoner for a day or so, raping her multiple times. That discouraged me from going to that Wal-Mart, as this happened during the day. I don't need bargains that badly. The people of Wal-Mart there are rather unsavory looking.
Back to Costco---it was actually a nice store and physically connected to one of the 2 major malls here. They handled the crowds very well, having probably 20 people at the check-out lanes to handle the crowds. All the big box stores have someone checking as you leave, so it wasn't offensive.
Hopefully when the novelty wears off, it will be more pleasant shopping there. The people from Sarasota act as if they've never gotten free food samples. Well, actually we don't get many here. Publix hardly ever gives anything free. My former favorite Amish place no longer gives samples. The young son took over the management and is really pinching those pennies.
One woman yesterday reached around me from directly behind to grab samples before I could get one for SR and myself. Another woman ran into my cart and jammed it into my chest (they have high carts and I'm short). A guy standing near me said "that has to hurt". It did. She didn't even say she was sorry.
Shopping at the Clearwater Fl and at the Fort Myers Costco is much more pleasant. But this one saves us a whole bunch of gas. (the others are about 60 and 70+ miles respectively.)

They check your receipt because there are no bags when you check out. You can use a cut out cardboard box, but one can walk out with product easily if there wasn't someone who checks on the way out. There are a fair amount of degenerates in Florida so I can't blame the system. It only adds a minute or two on the way out so it's not much of a hassle.

If it is a Sam's or Costco and it is posted policy, then it is a little different because it is a membership store and when you buy the membership, you agree to the rules.
But Best Buy, Walmart and the rest, they can pound sand on the check the receipt thing.
Once I pay for it, I own it.
Think I stole something, then call the police and press charges.
