But JFK was considered a rookie, by the standards of the day. He had a high profile in social circles, but very little experience in government or business. He was considered more of a show horse than a work horse, and his election owed a great deal to television, and his looks, rather than any substance. RFK had more chops in government, but both of them were still more celebrities than statesmen, and their campaigns were based on that more than their command of the issues or the mechanics of government.
