In all the years that I been using and working on computers, I have only ever had one virus and maybe two trojans. Common sense is the best antivirus...
I've used AVG Free and liked it. Tried Avast but for some reason it brought my system to a screaming halt ???

Use malwarebytes and then occasionally run acebyte utilities or advanced system care 5 and CC cleaner.
