My colleague Carla Hall and I see eye-to-eye on many things, but on some issues, we see something more like drumstick-to-lentils. That is to say, we couldn't have disagreed more on the Los Angeles City Council's call to residents to go meatless on Mondays as a way to lose weight, eat more healthfully and help the environment. She loved the idea -- see her blog post below -- I rolled my eyes, and we agreed on dueling blog posts. Gentle resolution or not, from my perspective, the council went over the line on this one.

It's a silly thing for them to spend their time on; it's not like they're closing steakhouses and burger joints on Mondays (nor should they). It's a "suggestion". I'd like to see a picture of the city council members, and how they tip the scales.

While I personally believe that eating less hamburger is inarguably a positive dietary change, the idea that eschewing meat will automatically make you lose weight is not scientific. I see people at the health food restaurant food bar loading up on "healthy veggies". By and large these items are indeed healthy in their ingredient but not in their proportions. Nothing floating in olive oil is "healthy" per se. Olive oil is indeed better for you than butter, but it has the same amount of calories as butter and attaches itself to your hips like butter.

You want to have a dietary positive movement? Have "no white foods monday". No sugar, no flour, no potatoes, no white rice.

I have a feeling if the health nuts and vegetarians continue to preach and try to force their eating habits on everyone else they will find their own health and life span may be drastically reduced.
How is obama working out for you?

I have been eating nothing white for almost a year now, and the difference is phenomenal. My weight, blood pressure, and other physical indicators are perfect. My triglygerides were high - 180 (normal is below 150) when I started, and now the reading is 98. My cholesterol was 211, and is now 152. At 57, I weigh the same or less as when I was in college.

I weigh the same as I did when I was 15 years old. Unfortunately, I was fat then too. :)

While the dietary advice in this thread seems sensible, do we really need anyone in the government wasting their time telling us that? When members of government think they have to take on the role of nanny, it is troublesome to me, even if it isn't exactly in the form of a piece of legislation.
