Several sources familiar with the process say Hagel appears to have the inside track for the job. CNN has previously reported Hagel is on the short list of potential nominees. One Democratic source familiar with the process simply dubs Hagel "the frontrunner." Another Democrat with knowledge of the process calls Hagel’s nomination "almost a done deal." But according to an administration official, no decisions have been made.
...that was unexpected...

Highly critical of the Bush administration. Voted along party lines 78% of the time. Rumored to be Def Sec and even VP pick for Obama in 2008.
Served 2 years in the Army, Vietnam Vet. Wounded twice. He served on the Intelligence Committee while in the Senate, but that seems to be the only thing defense related.
Now I haven't read to much more then the guys Wiki page, but I'm not sure what his qualifications are for Sec Def.In most sports, cold-cocking an opposing player repeatedly in the face with a series of gigantic Slovakian uppercuts would get you a multi-game suspension without pay.
In hockey, it means you have to sit in the penalty box for five minutes.

Hagel brings at least a little bit of credibility to the gig, vice Panetta who isn't much more than yet another Washington Dem insider. Yeah, Panetta served in the Army for a couple of years in the early Sixties, but that was the extent of his military experience.
Hagel's yet another RINO, which also helps the faux image that Barry has "crossed the aisle" in looking for talent. Just another smokescreen.
Finally, Hagel's anti-Iraq and anti-Afghanistan stance will go far in keeping the Taliban patient. All they have to do is bide their time (not that they will, necessarily) and Chuckie will hand them A-stan on a platter.
It's actually a smart move for Barry. He gets his cake and eats it too.U.S. Army, Retired
