    OK, just to get away from all the unpleasant news these days ... will hazard a guess.

    Looks like a whopping great shaft, perhaps an elevator shaft for a 2 story building of some kind.

    Okay, so I was a bit off. It's a piston rod for a DU-Sulzer 12RTA96C.

    Added:
    MAKE: Wartsila-Sulzer
    MODEL: RTA96-C
    YEAR: 2003
    COLOR: Polished steel
    CAR (?):

    But everybody knew that........

    MARV FOUND IT!
    The square plate at the bottom of the piston rod is called a crosshead. It is where the connecting rod connects and then goes to the crankshaft. Its purpose is to redirect the thrust so that the cylinder doesn't wear in an elliptical pattern.

    Here's a picture of the engine itself: This is a six cylinder version:

    Described as freakishly huge, these engines have up to 14 cylinders and put out upwards of 100,000 HP. They are 2 stroke, supercharged diesels, with a stroke of 98 inches !

    Here's the crankshaft for the 10 cylinder version:
