County Police Chief Recommends Arming School Personnel
Fitch said the killing will not be stopped by legislation or laws. “If there’s somebody that’s really hellbent on doing something like this, they’re not going to care what the law is.”
he chief is adamant about his plans but realizes his calls for arming school workers will be met with resistance.

One of my good friends has her doctorate in education, ditto her hubby. They both feel that teachers should be armed for protection. When I taught years ago, I felt that I needed a gun to just get safely to my car. I know we can't recreate the Wild West, but teachers throwing their bodies between the kids and an armed gunman isn't going to exactly help the teachers.

It's the world we live in. I never thought it would be necessary, but I too agree, that at least one teacher in a school setting should have a gun. If not, an armed detail officer (not in uniform) should be stationed at every school.
Metal detectors are useless for this type of crime, as it's only useful to alert, not stop.

While I applaud hiring the handicapped, teachers without arms are at a tremendous disadvantage. For example, how do they write on the blackboard?

Almost all mass shootings happen in gun free zones. Once again our fools in government make all schools gun free zones. Ever see a mass shooter go to a police station?
We all know the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
My opinion is EVERY teacher should be mandated to carry concealed and train regularly.
When it is common knowledge that all teachers are armed...the mass school shootings stop.

Meh....You propose replacing a disarm mandate with an arm mandate. Both are wrong, I believe. To me, it would be enough to have volunteer teachers armed, but no mandate. After all, there are some people who simply will not carry a gun. I think they should be allowed to do as they see fit.

That way, at least, those who choose not to be armed do so from a position of being intimately informed of the requirements and mechanics of presenting an armed response to threats, and hopefully, loose any irrational fear of firearms borne of misinformation or ignorance.
We don't mandate that teachers all be firefighters, but there's a fire extinguisher in every class room, and teachers are (I sincerely hope) trained to use them.
01-07-2013, 08:09 PMWe have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other. In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress.

It seems to work for where the President sends his girls to school. Sidwell Friends school in DC has at least 11 armed personel on staff plus the Secret Service escort.Solve a man's problem with violence and help him for a day. Perhaps mandating all teachers be armed is a bit of a knee jerk reaction.
But just like all police MUST be armed, are teachers charged with our most precious things?
Just a thought. The problem with volunteering is what if none do so?
Or what if the classroom the nut job picks is unarmed?
I suppose a portion of the teachers would work. Until someone went into an unarmed classroom and killed 10 kids, then the left would say "see, that didn't work".
I like the Israel model. Layers of protection. Armed security outside, hardened single point entry, metal detectors, and armed teachers. They never have school shootings anymore.
I don't know the solution. I just know gun free zones are killing fields.
I took classes, underwent a complete background check, and had to prove competency (although I thought it far too easy) to get my CHL. I agree Americans should be allowed to own firearms and carry them. I agree Americans should be allowed to own assault rifles with high capacity magazines. The 2nd amendment is not about hunting or home defense. It's about the government understanding that its people are well armed and if the government over steps it's power too far, trouble could and has followed. That being said, I would have no problem having to take classes on the proper use, storage, and laws pertaining to assault weapons. Just like my CHL required a background check for me, a background check for my family to ensure no mentally ill individuals would be around said firearm would also be OK with me. I would even go so far as to agree that proof of adequate safes are owned in order to own assault weapons. But take those assault weapons from the citizens, and we move towards a slippery slope. I want the federal government to be very aware its populace is well armed and thus they need to follow the constitution. However I am not for a class 3 firearms requirement which is nothing more than taxation and registration. The first step toward confiscation. But for bigger more powerful rifles of military capabilities I have no problems with a little more scrutiny on who owns them. And I’m perfectly OK with background checks required at all gun shows. Like different types of licenses are required to drive different sized vehicles, proof of more advanced classes could be required for more powerful weapons. Not something recorded by the government but self policed by certified instructors. Like an NRA Assault Weapons safety class. The owner (mom) was responsible for access to that AR15. And while very heartbreaking I feel if she had a mentally ill son it was her responsibility to ensure isolation of her fire arms. Just like in Texas if a kid gets a hold of my firearms it’s my fault. What if you had to show a course completion for assault rifles and high capacity mags? We get a better trained civilian populace and a safer citizenry.
But I’m not for government registration.
