When their blind eight-year-old dog went missing from their remote Alaskan home in a heavy snowstorm, the Grapengeter family felt sure they'd never see her again. But after more than a week of searching in temperatures as low as minus 40C, Abby, a brown-and-white mixed-breed whom the Grapengeters rescued from an animal shelter as a puppy, turned up safe and sound at the home of a local vet.

Like most dog lovers, I love what dogs can do. I heard of another dog who was hit by a car, and dragged himself to the vets office, and was there when they opened up in the morning.

I watched a program about strange companions - you know, when a dog makes friends with a deer and so forth - and they covered a dog who had made friends with a porpoise. The dog could somehow know when the porpoise was coming and would bark and run into the sea water. Then, sure enough, the porpoise would show up and they would swim together until the dog was exhausted, and then the porpoise would surface underneath the dog and take him ashore.

    Damnedest thing I ever saw.

Dogs are people, too. They're part of the family.
