Next week's close encounter will be closest ever observed by NASA

    By Seth Cline
    January 31, 2013
An asteroid half the size of a football field could whiz by Earth closer than some satellites next week, according to NASA.

Since scientists began taking sky surveys in the 1990s, none of the nearly 10,000 near-Earth objects discovered have come closer than next week's asteroid, named 2012 DA14, according to NASA's Near Earth Object Program.

Don Yeomans, who heads the Near Earth Object Program, told Space.com that this asteroid definitely won't hit Earth, but will come "extremely close."

There is still hope we may not have to go through 4 more years of an Obama presidency.

I understand it's supposed to come within about 17K miles, or roughly 2/3 of the way out to where the geosynchronous satellites are. While it will miss, it comes so close that Earth's gravity will definitely have a drastic effect on its trajectory. The concern is whether that will make it an impacter on its next close approach which would be in 2020 (IIRC) or just completely alter the orbit for good or ill.

They predict the landfall of our hurricanes with pinpoint accuracy days ahead of time, forecast our weather with absolute perfection every time, they can even tell us to within a half of a degree what the earths average temperature will be 50 years from now.

I mean what could go wrong.

6 more days till it's here, if we had one of those shuttles left we could fly up and smear it good with Preparation-H.
