There have also been a great number of articles describing how trolls and other posters are hired to do everything from protect companies' reputations to trashing political ideas on various websites. These people have to be hired by some kind of company which then is contracted by clients. The trolls are just collecting a small paycheck and may not be ideologically motivated at all. It's a business. Many of the trolling/persuasive techniques discussed in these articles are identical to what I have seen on DU.
I have no doubt that DU was a party operation subcontracted to a PR firm (or PAC with in-house PR). The young people that "run" it are the face that attract the young base (and some computer literate adults) and the board itself exists for many reasons: to push Democratic talking points, to gather information about the young vote--and pre-Facebook, this was a really important function of DU, as well as to "take the temperature" of a sample of people who identified as Democrats. The word "underground" appealed to the progressive left (as in Weather Underground), but it was always a mainstream Democratic (DLC) propaganda outlet.
