    MURDER STATISTICS FOR THE WORLD!

Kind of contradicts what the hand wringing politicians would have us believe, doesn't it?

After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn't do it. - William S. Burroughs.

Cory Booker was on Bill Maher's panel on Friday night. He is a somewhat strong advocate of gun control and he was arguing with people who were all gun owners (at least Maher and Sam Harris are).

One of the reasons mayors of large cities, like Booker, want stricter gun control is because in their cities (like mine), lots of damage is done by thugs using semi-automatic weapons. I disagree with some of his ideas about how to control crime of that nature, but I don't think he is a bad guy or has some kind of ulterior motives in wanting to do something about it. He understands the fact that most of these crimes are committed with illegally purchased guns. But there is a sense among people in urban settings that banning clips with the capacity to hold large amounts of ammo will somehow reduce the numbers of victims in a drive by shooting. I don't agree with this, and this is an idea that people who don't own or use guns bring up all the time. All I do is point out that the clips/magazines can be bought illegally as easily as the gun itself, or crack cocaine, for that matter.

As much as people despised Coleman Young when he was mayor of Detroit, there was one thing he was fairly conservative about-gun laws. He was known to pack himself, and wasn't about to give up his guns. People from outside of Detroit always were trying to pressure him to do like Chicago did, and enact stricter gun control policies than the rest of the state had. He always refused-he said he had to worry about people from the "hostile suburbs" coming in to harrass the good people of the fair city of Detroit. But the rest of us knew like he did-it was to allow people to defend themselves against their fellow Detroiters.

Is this the same Corey Booker who stuck up for law abiding gun owners?

Yes. He did stand up for legal gun owners. Maher's show consists in a large part of the panel discussions, which are the best part of the show. Corey was discussing different things that could be done, he seemed to be taking a stand on the 30 round clips. Maybe I misinterpreted what he was saying?. But it was part of the panel discussion, so it's not always easy to understand who is advocating what policy idea.

But he also conceded that it is a complicated issue, and that he supports the right of law abiding citizens to own guns. That's kind of how I feel about it, as I am not a gun owner but if I felt the need to become one, I would not want any infringements on my ability to do so.

He also announced he was a primary candidate for Senate. He will be running against one Gerry Rivers for the democratic candidacy. I hope Corey cleans the floor with Geraldo.

OK. Gun ban, maybe. What they really need is a machete ban, I guess.

I doubt if they're organized enough to have much of a gun ban. A high official from Togo was at my house in St Louis for a freebie dinner. He'd never allow guns to be owned by the every day citizens of his country. He'd be afraid they'd assassinate him.

That's probably a common theme in many of those countries---keep the guns out of the hands of ordinary folk so they wouldn't turn against their petty anty dictators. I also noticed how dangerous those islands in the Caribbean are.

So you're a fan of the rainforest there?

Now I've got this stupid song running through my head, "The rainforest, the tropical rainforest." They used to play a movie for kids participating in a class at the St Louis Zoo. I heard that song so many times with all the little school groups.
