If they pick me I'll still post here. There are some heathens on this site that need preachin' to.

Timothy Dolan would be a good pick but there's about a 0% chance there would ever be an American pope.

Pope Joachim Bartholomew I sounds pretty cool though.

As long as there's dry ice around, I'll be fine.

I want Dolan to get it. Then I can say that I told off the Pope.

He taught my son's confirmation class at Immacolata Church in St Louis. My son was always quiet and didn't get into trouble. But Dolan picked on him big time. I usually never got involved, but he was such a jerk that I went to the church and had a discussion with him. He can be credited with my decision that my dad's Protestant church was more in line with my thinking. My mom didn't like my opinion of the Catholic church, thanks in large part to Timothy Dolan.

As a Catholic, and I hate to say it, Popes don't retire. They die. I hope I'm wrong, but their may be something scandalous going on behind the scenes.

    Yea they do and have.

Celestine V: Overwhelmed by the demands of the office, stepped down after five months as pope in 1294.

There have been 3 others who also stepped down.

The dude is 85, a lot can happen too you at 85. Just not a good age for a career at one of the most demanding times in history. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, even holding that massive hat up at that age can't be easy.

If there's anything to suspect, it's the part about how it's not about illness. It's hard not to have some sort of illness at 86. I would not be surprised to find out some time down the road that, like Reagan back in the late '80s, he's beginning to see the signs of senility/Alzheimer's/dementia setting in, and he doesn't want to put himself or the Church in the awkward position of him not having his wits about him while making the kinds of decisions that a Pope has to make.
Olde-style, states' rights conservative. Ask if this concept confuses you.
