The shooter's name was Ali Syed.

The home where the woman was killed is owned by Irfan and Sarwat Syed.

It seems to have been a domestic dispute.

The multi-city crime spree begins in Ladera Ranch and ends with the gunman killing himself in Villa Park. The Ladera victim may have ties to a 2011 hit-and-run accident that injured a 4-year-old girl.

...The violence began around 4:45 a.m. when a woman was shot to death in a home on Red Leaf Lane in Ladera Ranch, authorities said. Property records show the home was owned by Irfan and Sarwat Syed, according to the Orange County Register. In 2011, a woman named Sarwat Syed was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after an accident that severely injured a 4-year-old girl, the paper said.

From Ladera Ranch, the gunman headed north. Around 5:30 a.m., Tustin police received a report of a carjacking and shooting involving a Dodge pickup at a gas station at Red Hill Avenue and Nisson Road, where a person was wounded but expected to survive, Amormino said.

The owner of the Dodge never put gas in the truck, prompting the suspect to search for another vehicle, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

Soon after that, a man was fatally shot in a carjacking on Village Way near the 55 Freeway in Santa Ana, authorities said.

The gunman "got out of the vehicle, confronted our victim who was in his BMW ... orders him out of the vehicle, walks him to the side of the curb and executes our victim," Bertagna said.

The gunman then got into the victim's vehicle and drove back to Tustin, where another carjacking occurred near the Micro Center at Edinger Avenue, police said.

At that scene, one person was killed and another was wounded by gunfire, Tustin police Lt. Paul Garaven said. Police also fielded reports of the gunman opening fire on the 55 freeway, either as he drove or after he stopped, exited the vehicle and fired rounds at passing motorists, Garaven said.

"We're still investigating how many more victims we might have. We've had three victims come forward since this morning and say they're a victim of being shot at on the freeway," Garaven said. "One of the reporting parties had some minor injuries; the other two have only had damage to the their vehicles."

According to KCAL9, a plumber who was wounded in the Micro Center shooting followed the suspect, relaying his location to law enforcement via cell phone.

When police later pulled over the suspect at Katella Avenue and Wanda Road near the border of Orange and Villa Park, the gunman shot and killed himself, authorities said.

The suspect was a 19-year-old Ladera Ranch man, according to KCBS-2.

O.C. shooter runs out of gas, then 'executes' victim, police say

...Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said the suspect stole the vehicle from a gas station near Red Hill Avenue and the 5 Freeway in Tustin, but apparently picked one that had not been filled. When the vehicle ran out of gas at about 5:15 a.m., the man stopped near the 55 Freeway and McFadden Avenue and approached a BMW.

“He got out of the vehicle, confronts our victim who is in his BMW," Bertagna said. "He orders him out of the vehicle, walks him to the curb and executes our victim."

...The killings appeared to begin in Ladera Ranch, where Orange County deputies received a call from inside a Red Leaf Lane home at 4:45 a.m. about a shooting, Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said. Responding deputies found a woman dead inside who had been shot multiple times.

Jason Glass, who lives across the street, said he was working in his garage when he heard what he now believes were three to five gunshots between 2 and 3 a.m. About 4 a.m., Glass said, he "heard a bunch of ruckus" — no yelling, but lots of doors slamming — before a car sped away from the house.

"I just thought somebody was being really loud and obnoxious," Glass said.

The suspect, initially described as a man in his 20s, fled the area in an SUV and headed toward Tustin, where Amormino said "multiple incidents" occurred.

The first, authorities said, occurred near Red Hill Avenue and the 5 Freeway, where authorities received a report of a man with a gun about 5:10 a.m. The suspect attempted a carjacking, Tustin police Lt. Paul Garaven, opened fire and wounded a bystander.

About five minutes later, the suspect stopped the BMW near the 55 Freeway in Santa Ana, officials said.

Around that time, authorities also received reports about a man shooting at moving vehicles on the 55 Freeway. Officials believe the man fired either while driving or after he stopped and got out of his vehicle. At least three victims have reported minor injuries or damage to their cars, and investigators asked that others who believe they may have been fired upon to contact police.

Shortly after, another shooting and carjacking was reported on Edinger Avenue near the Micro Center computer store in Tustin, Garaven said. One person was killed and another was taken to a hospital.

Co-workers identified the men as plumbers who were working at the under-construction Fairfield Inn on Edinger Avenue.

Officers spotted the suspect in a stolen vehicle, followed him into the city of Orange and initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of East Katella Avenue and North Wanda Road, Garaven said.

The suspect then shot and killed himself, authorities said. A shotgun was recovered, but officials said other weapons might have been involved earlier. .....

    He doesn't look Dutch, Rock.

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) _ Southern California law enforcement authorities have identified the gunman in an unexplained shooting rampage as a 20-year-old unemployed part-time student.

Tustin police Chief Scott Jordan says Ali Syed lived at the Ladera Ranch residence where the first victim was slain.

Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says that victim is a young woman in her 20s who has not been identified and is not related to the shooter.

The rampage early Tuesday left three victims dead and several wounded. The shooter killed himself.

    KFI on the shooter:

Ali lived in the home with his parents. The young woman who was killed in the house was not related to Ali, and speculation is that she might have been a girlfriend, but there is nothing certain.

Ali was unemployed and a student.

Ali had no criminal record. The police had never visited the house.

Police are pretty clear that none of the victims (outside the home) were specifically targeted. Ali apparently killed a young woman in his parents' home, carjacked a bunch of cars and killed their owners.

Police don't know what precipitated the initial shooting at 5:45 am at the house.
