    The Washington Post reported:

British explorer Ranulph Fiennes on Monday pulled out of an expedition to cross Antarctica during the region’s winter after developing frostbite — a bitter disappointment for an adventurer who had spent years preparing for one of the last great polar challenges.

The 68-year-old and his five-member team had hoped to traverse nearly 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) in a place where temperatures often dip as low as minus 70 Celsius (minus 94 Fahrenheit). The expedition, dubbed “The Coldest Journey,” will continue without him.

“The condition is such that he has very reluctantly decided … to withdraw from Antarctica while the possibility to do so still exists, before the onset of the Antarctic winter,” the expedition said in a statement.

    Climate-Temperature Spike story

"In 100 years, we've gone from the cold end of the spectrum to the warm end of the spectrum," Marcott said. "We've never seen something this rapid. Even in the ice age the global temperature never changed this quickly."

These people have no understanding at all about the temperature extremes this planet has experienced. The great lakes are still rising. rebounding from the weight of the glacial layer that covered the entire Canadian plate. Evidence in the rocks support at least three swings from that extreme to an average of 25 deg C for a high. It's a case of 'last week' is all of the history we need.

If the earth has never had such a swing how did those mammoths end up flash frozen with fresh grass in their throats?
It's not how old you are, it's how you got here.
It's been a long road and not all of it was paved.
