# Thread: Brain teaser: Balloon on a bus!

#### Hybrid View

1. I know you all are smart enough to guess this, plus there is only 3 answers! Go for it!

You're sitting on a bus. The kid next to you has a helium-filled balloon and it ends up against the ceiling, just about in the center of the bus. The driver suddenly hits the gas pedal and the bus lurches forward, throwing you back into your seat. What does the balloon do?

a. It moves backwards.
b. It moves forward.
c. It stays where it is.

Um ... all 3?

Moves backwards when driver hits the gas pedal ... moves forward when it slows down ... rests where it is for a second and decides to get the heck out, and wait for the NEXT bus!

Wouldn't you with such erratic driving?

Ha! Ha! ...

Wasn't even trying either! Have things on my mind at the moment pumpkin!

5. It appearsto move backwards relative to the motion of the bus. Inertia causes it to lag behind the bus' acceleration.

Sic hacer pace, para bellum.

I know you are smart, but you missed the bus on this one!

7. It moves forward with the bus........just like the kid who gets slammed against the back of the seat moves forward with the bus.

Marv, you are right for all the wrong reasons! Behold:

. It moves forward. When the bus moves forward, the heavier air moves to the back of the bus. The helium balloon is lighter than air, so it is pushed forward. Give it try yourself sometime!

Interesting. I'd have thought that it would move with the air before being pushed forward. I'll have to try it, but only after I try to replicate the WTC demolition with chicken wire and lighter fluid.

10. a.
