Teacher booted from Portland School District after protracted battle with Planned Parenthood

March 22, 2013 (American Life League) - An exemplary math and computer science teacher has been unjustly escorted out of Benson High School by police following a protracted battle with school officials about Planned Parenthood’s presence in the school and its association with his students.
Bill Diss was notified on Tuesday after the last student left his class that he was being placed immediately on administrative leave “pending a recommendation to the superintendent that you be dismissed from your employment with Portland public schools for reasons that have been discussed with you.” The mild-mannered Mr. Diss told STOPP that he was given only a few minutes to gather his belongings before police escorted him out. He was ordered not to return to the Portland, Oregon, school where he has taught for 11 years.
Mr. Diss is an outstanding teacher, who recently was awarded certification and recognition as the only teacher in Oregon who is qualified to teach college level computer science to high school students for dual credit. He has taught at the college and high school level for a total of 18 years.
Planned Parenthood has been in pursuit of Mr. Diss since 2007 when he began organizing efforts to stop Planned Parenthood. A STOPP press release from February of 2009 noted that Planned Parenthood of Columbia Willamette wanted Bill Diss’ teaching license revoked. The press release quoted American Life League’s Jim Sedlak: “Bill has organized one of the most effective efforts against Planned Parenthood in the country. It’s no surprise Planned Parenthood will resort to anything—even going after his teaching license—in order to silence him....”

Firing an academically superior teacher because he doesn't think Planned Parenthood should be promoting teenage sex and abortion (or the other logical outcome, teen parenthood) is INSANE. School should not be about Planned Parenthood. Where is the ACLU? His first amendment rights have been violated.
By the way, for those of you who still think that public education is about academics, think again. It's about promoting certain values, like teen sex, abortion and gay rights. That's what the firing of this man has proved. You can be the lousiest teacher on earth, but if you're ok with a 14-year old having sex way before she is ready and then getting an abortion, you can stay.

He shouldn't have been fired for what he does on his own time. I also think the school officials basically set him up on the whole identification thing for the PP speakers. He probably could win a lawsuit and be reinstated, if that's what he wants to do.

It does sound like Mr. Diss has at least some support. That article wasn't exactly unbiased, but if even one-tenth of it is true, Mr. Diss has been a real thorn in the sides to PP.
I would think there's at least one lawyer in Oregon who will step up and represent Mr. Diss.U.S. Army, Retired

The school district just wants to get rid of him and they know they'll have to pay him off eventually. They know they can't win in the courts but they will drag it out in hopes of tiring this champion of the unborn and they will pay him just to get rid of him.We're from Philadelphia, We Fight- Chip Kelly

The school will settle with him. It's worth the suit to keep the pension-if his work record says he was fired, he doesn't get his pension. The school district will realize quickly that their legal resources are lacking, compared to the NEA's. And, if the teacher is a member of the NEA (or the AFT), the union has to represent him through the grievance process.
I had a coworker who was initially fired for things that she should have been fired for doing. During the grievance process, the union was able to press the state to let her resign, so she could keep her pension. In this particular situation, the coworker was known for being litigious, so management decided to let her keep her pension since it would probably get tied up in court for years. She's done in public-sector social work, though, but I'll bet Laurie's House to Save Babies in Branson, MO would probably hire her (Jim Bakker's ministry).
