Students pulled on gloves, grabbed shovels and planted fruits and vegetables Tuesday morning at B.D. Gullett Elementary School in Lakewood Ranch.
On Thursday, five of those students will hone their gardening skills alongside first lady Michelle Obama at the White House.
“I was really surprised. It was the best day of my life,” said Emilio Vega, one of five Gullett students who were invited to plant the White House Kitchen Garden to promote Obama's HealthierUS Schools Challenge “I could not believe my eyes when I read it.”
