WASHINGTON — If the feds get their way, meats on supermarket shelves will include some unappetizing details, such as where the animal was slaughtered.

Better get used to it: Labels on meat products sold in the U.S. could soon read like a sad mini-biography of the ranch-raised beasts.
In a little-known regulatory action that has produced a storm of criticism, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has moved to rework how meats are sold at retailers, including grocery stores, are labeled. Under the Obama administration’s plan, meats would have to include labels informing the consumer where the animal was born, raised and slaughtered.

They have no idea the burden this will cause the farmer as well as the associated cost and waste. Can I go back to bed and wake up with all this madness ended?The difference between pigs and people is that when they tell you you're cured it isn't a good thing.

This has been tossed around now since the Mad Cow scares started 5+ years ago. Wanting "Nation of Origin" labeling along with packing plant info. on packages so in the event of a recall they know where it came from.
We already where I work kinda do the packing plant record keeping, but not on the packages them selves, but in log books when we process any thing, but then again, we actually do the processing our selves and not bring in the pre-packaged stuff you will see in other stores like Wal-mart or other stores where all they do is open the box and set the packs on the shelf without even touching the meat.
Its done by the packer name, (Example Greater Omaha) and the EST number (Establishment Number (EST 717A)) which identifies the packing plant that it came from.
It does add a level of pain in the arse to meat processing, but in this lawyer happy age we live in, its more about passing fault down to the next level in the event of a recall or sickness. We can say we followed our rules, here is the source, they go to the packer, and if they had other stores reporting the same issue, they in turn try and pass fault off to the farmer by saying it was at his farm and not their plant. Then they go check out the farm for problems. Its all about passing the buck when there is a problem.
Will you see "Farm of origin" on the labels, unlikely as having to constantly change packing labels for the odd 10 thousand farms is too costly. But Nation or even "State" is more likely as we do that already.Klaatu barada nikto
