SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Accused Fort Hood shooting spree gunman Major Nidal Hasan asked a U.S. military judge on Wednesday for permission to fire his court-appointed lawyers and represent himself at his court martial, a Fort Hood spokesman said.

The judge, Colonel Tara Osborn, will consider Hasan's request at a hearing next week. Jury selection, which had been scheduled to begin next week, has been pushed back to June 5, the spokesman said.

Hasan, 42, has been charged with killing 13 people and wounding 32 others when he opened fire on a group of soldiers at Fort Hood who were preparing to deploy to Iraq in November 2009. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted on the charges.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, is paralyzed from the chest down from gunshots fired by two civilian Fort Hood police officers who ended what was the worst shooting at a U.S. military installation.

He has twice asked that the death penalty be removed so he could plead guilty to the shootings, a request Osborn has refused. Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Hasan cannot plead guilty to a capital crime.

Maybe if he self-represents we can get rid of this notion some folks have that this is work place violence and take a common sense approach to Islam control.

Won't happen. Even if Hasan announced to the court that the Qur'an justified his actions and that it is higher than man-made law and that the UCMJ has no bearing on the case, and then began chanting "Allahu Akbar" as he rolled his wheelchair around the courtroom, the powers that be would still not admit that this was Islamic terrorism.

These jihadis scream at the top of their lungs that they are motivated by Islam, that their murders, rapes, beheadings, tortures and other assorted atrocities are motivated by Islam, and our idiot elites cling to their narratives of anything other than Islam as the cause.

Remember Islam is not our enemy, only those that follow it's teachings.

The potential good is that he probably will not be able to represent himself as well as the court appointed attorneys. And isn't it funny that he doesn't want the death penalty? I guess that doesn't apply to the people he killed. They had no choice. Workplace violence is utter BS.

You can represent yourself as a terrorist on trial, asshole. Not some perpetrator of "workplace violence." You get to represent yourself solely as someone charged with terrorism.

In that case, fine, asshole, go right ahead.

By representing himself...IMO...he's got a built in appeal if the jury decides to give this asshole the death penalty.
