#1 Tennessee judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'08-12-2013, 10:17 PM
WBIR-Newport) A Newport mother is appealing a court's decision after a judge ordered her son's name be changed from "Messiah."
Jaleesa Martin and the father of Messiah could not agree on a last name, which is how they ended up at a child support hearing in Cocke County Chancery Court on Thursday.
That is when the first name came into question.
Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew serves the 4th Judicial District of Tenn. including the following counties: Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson, and Sevier.
The name change was part of Judge Ballew's case; however, the parents did not think the first name would be changed.
Judge Ballew ordered the 7-month-old's name be "Martin DeShawn McCullough." It includes both parent's last names but leaves out Messiah.

parents should have the right to name their kids whatever they want. No matter the consequences for that poor sap kid later in life!

Since Hispanic families name their kids "Jesus" and we know at least one little girl was named "Madonna", I can't see what the issue is for the court.
Now as to the parents, they should have had more sense than to name their child something guaranteed to make him the target of the schoolyard.

The court is overstepping it's bounds in this case. Yet, it was a situation in which the parents were arguing about the name, so the court was ruling in a strictly divorce/custody type of proceeding, not a child protection one. In the latter situation, it would definitely be overstepping on the court's part.
I've seen far worse names than Messiah given to babies. He'll get teased, but there are worse things and names to get teased over.
