The first section contains thousands of modern books and reference material dating from the 19th and 20th centuries covering religion, science and other subjects written in Coptic, Greek, Arabic, English and Amharic. The second section of the library contains hand-written priceless manuscripts in Coptic and Arabic dating back as early as the 1300s.(snip)
The Monastery of the Holy Virgin Mary, also known as the Muharraq Monastery, was forced to cancel Sunday mass this week. It was the first time the monastery cancelled mass in 1600 years. The monastery lies on the path of the flight of the Holy Family in Egypt.
The Muslim Brotherhood torched the holy monastery last week.
Father Silvanus Lutfi, pastor of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, announced, “We did not hold Sunday Mass for the first time of the life of the monastery 1600 years ago.”
Tour Egypt has more on this historic monastery and holy site.
When muslim armies spread across North Africa (killing while spreading the religion of peace), they also destroyed the ancient library at Alexandria.
In 642 AD, Alexandria was captured by the Muslim army of Amr ibn al `Aas. Amr writes to Caliph Omar, the second Caliph of Rashidun Caliphate, for instructions, and Omar replies: "If those books are in agreement with the Quran, we have no need of them; and if these are opposed to the Quran, destroy them."
...and tradition is a powerful force.
