The USDB has continuously been accredited from the American Correctional Association (ACA) since 1988. The accreditation is a tool to measure compliance with nationally recognized standards for an adult correctional institution. The accreditation is valid for a three year period. To receive accreditation the USDB must meet or exceed more than 500 standards covering administration and management, training, physical plant, institutional operations, institutional services, and inmate programs.
I was curious about the food service standard against which USDB and other prisons are audited against. Wondering if the muzzie angle had to be accommodated by them providing halal food; and kosher food, for that matter, should there be any Jewish inmates.
I found a Powerpoint presentation with this slide:
*Sufficient quantity of plain but wholesome food
*Three meals a day prepared under the supervision of a civilian cook
*Menu should be varied
*Inmates assisting in food preparation should be certified by the jail physician
And this slide:
Food – Caloric requirements and nutritional standards set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council.
*Central dining room with cafeteria service.
*“Hospital-type cleanliness” in the kitchen, food storerooms, and during preparations
And this slide:
Food Service –
*Wholesome and nutritionally adequate diet provided by a combination of foods.
*Recommended Dietary Allowance (food allowances of pounds per day per inmate).
*Special diets by prescription of physician.
*Hot foods at least 140°, cold food 50-60°.
*Sanitation policies approved by qualified public health sanitary engineer and qualified sanitarian.
I'm not seeing anywhere in any of that that mandates halal or kosher food for USDB convicts.
But hell, given our muzzie-loving president, it wouldn't surprise me if he's already issued an EO mandating same.U.S. Army, Retired
