I read the accounts as well, but what I got out of it was he was "searching" for something. Unfortunately, he found it -- a series of well-placed bullets in his corpse.
Seriously, I did not take from any of those reports that he was any sort of serious Buddhist. He was exploring.
If he were serious about Buddhism, it's highly doubtful he would've been so wrapped up in violent video games -- First Person Shooter games, I would imagine.U.S. Army, Retired

Again, I need to ask. How much did political correctness play into this. Here is a guy with several violent acts to his name and yet none of these acts are on his jacket.

It seems like the game companies are missing a niche by not marketing First Person Shooters to Buddhists. Perhaps a game called Blind Zen Archer, in which the player is guided by sound? Even if they don't sell many games, the cost of the graphics would be so low that overhead would be minimal.
