A series of books that I've enjoyed, set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, is the Gaunt's Ghosts series written by Dan Abnett.Solve a man's problem with violence and help him for a day. Teach a man how to solve his problems with violence, help him for a lifetime - Belkar Bitterleaf

I am almost done with George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones). He has 5 books completed. They are long, though, and maybe too chick friendly for most guy readers. I watch the tv show, but I'm not getting blind-sided again after the "Red Wedding" episode last season.
The books are very entertaining, though. Lots of twists of fate, imperfect heroes, sex, blood, magic and weirdness. People compare it to Tolkein, but I never got past the first 10 pages of The Hobbit, because it was difficult to understand. Martin's writing style is much easier to follow.

All the books I mentioned I would recommend to any Sci Fi, Epic Fantasy fans BTW. My all time favorite of this genre is The Wheel Of Time series by Robert Jordan (finished by Brandon Sanderson). I was actually depressed when that series finally ended.
