Shutdown Blocks Kids With Cancer From Clinical Trials
Shutdown Blocks Kids With Cancer From Clinical Trials
By Sydney Lupkin
For every week that the government shutdown continues, 10 children with cancer will not be able to begin their clinical trials, officials told ABCNews.com.
John Burklow, a spokesman for the National Institutes of Health, estimated that 200 patients would experience these delays each week of the shutdown. Since 15 percent of these patients are typically children, and 33 percent of these children have cancer, that means the patients facing delays would include about 30 children per week, 10 of whom have cancer, he said.
Federal health programs are down thousands of employees, which hampers clinical trials and disease outbreak surveillance.
The NIH, for example, has had to furlough 14,700 employees – or 75 percent of its staff – as a result of the shutdown, Burklow told ABCNews.com. He expressed surprise that calls were even getting through, because he said his phone system had gone down this morning.
“Unfortunately, almost everybody is gone,” he said of his office. His staff in the media office has shrunk from 38 to one.
House Vote on “Research for Lifesaving Cures Act” – LIVE

Also debating National Park Service funding
As of this writing, the House is debating the “Research for Lifesaving Cures Act” meant to restore funding to the National Institutes of Health, including to continue the child cancer clinical trials. That debate is over, voting later. Now debating National Parks funding.
Obama has threatened to veto the measure. Harry Reid stammered when asked by reporters why Democrats were against it.
The vote should take place soon.
When they do post something they only tell 1/4 of the story. Like this Cali Democrat one:

So I took a trip to right wing bubble land to see what they're saying about the shutdown

They all appear to be obsessed and angry with the closing of war memorials due to the shutdown.
They're basically saying Obama hates America and is closing the memorials because he hates the military.
Did those fucking idiots not realize that the shutdown would lead to the closure of those memorials?
Of course Cali Democrat won't tell them (and they are in circle jerk mode refusing to listen to anything but the far left hero worship Obama media).
Obama and Dems declare political war on Veterans

Obama administration erects needless barricades to open-air WWII Memorial, and House Democrats kill funding for Veterans Administration
You probably know how the Obama administration erected barricades at the WWII memorial but a group of WWII veterans burst through the barricades anyway.
The barricades were political theater.
Ace has the story, Obama Adminstration Specifically Denied Exception to Permit Veterans to Attend WWII Memorial:
Before we go any further, let us note once again how contrived it is to shut down entryways to a wide open space out in the middle of a park.
This is not a building, like a museum, that has doors and staffers and guides. This is fucking scenery.
And yet the erected artificial barriers to block people from walking through outdoor scenery.
Voila! Now we can pretend a memorial standing unsupervised out in the open is a “National Park” or “Open Air Museum” and close it to pedestrian traffic (and people can in fact just walk through this thing in their normal transversing of the city).
Now, that out of the way: They then took the next step.
When they were informed that the Honor Flight was on the way, and that they should make one exception for the veterans of WWII and open up the artificial barriers they had erected to make a political point, they refused.

Harry Reid Blocks Kids With Cancer From Clinical Trials'Why would we want to do that?': Harry Reid dismisses funding children's cancer research separately from the rest of government
Fixed for accuracy.

It's not like the ACA won't be putting the brakes on costly medical research already.

I've been over at DU off and on. They have no clue as to what a debacle the Obama Admin has made of the shut down. Or how petty he is being. They refuse to post anything that is negative Obama or shows him as the fool he is.
They bloody well DO know how petty he is being, each and every one of them!!! It simply goes against their little lefty DU hearts to admit the truth on this. Would be far too embarrassing to do so.
Harry Reid in his own disgusting words, when asked by CNN's Dana Bash ...
BASH: But if you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?
REID: Why would we want to do that? I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own. This is — to have someone of your intelligence to suggest such a thing maybe means you’re irresponsible and reckless.
And you will get an unholy earful from me! Is difficult enough dealing with my husband and this horrible disease. I couldn't possibly imagine how parents of small children can even begin, to deal with it!
You folks at DU (and we know that you read this forum) are truly beneath contempt. You are nothing but lowlife, bitching, whining, miserable human beings, who wallow in your misery.
Well, enjoy it fools, 'cause it is about to get worse. Your beloved Obama has successfully pulled the wool over your eyes, and you will not believe what is about to hit you!PROUD DEPLORABLE

The new DU rules that discourage dissent even more are also in play here. If you have too many
posts "hidden" you in effect get banned on a temp basis. So unless you are a good lefty doo bee...May the FORCE be with you!

All partisanship aside, isn't there a way that some private hospital, like St. Jude's, could take in the 10 kids, and find a way to continue the trials? Pay the doctors who are currently working the trials to continue the treatment until the shutdown is over?
I don't think there are too many people on either side who have no compassion for the kids involved.

And all partisanship aside, this is Harry Reid, who has no compassion for the kids involved, as we have just seen.--Odysseus

I have always hated how the Dems sell their brand of Snake Oil "for the children". It is no less offensive when conservatives do it.
