Everyone seems to assume that longevity is progress. But look at what happens in the Third World: as poverty and disease go up, life expectancy at birth goes down, but the birth rate goes up and you have a population explosion with a population half of which is under 18 years old. Perhaps ultimately that brings about Easter Island, and Easter Island isn't known for having produced anything productive. Perhaps we're just chatty rats.

I have never read Brave New World or 1984. Why? Because they had become such a cliché by the time I was in high school. Every day someone would declare "It's like 1984" or "How Brave New World". So I didn't read them in a sort of protest. I actually skimmed 1984 for a class but it was dreary.

In 23 Advanced Economies: U.S. Adults Rank 21st in Math Skills
    October 18, 2013

(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) on Friday released the initial results of an international survey of adult skills in literacy and mathematics, revealing that Americans rank 21st in “numeracy” and are tied for 15th in literacy among adults in 23 advanced economies.

American adults also scored below the average in both numeracy and literacy for all respondents in all 23 advanced economies.
