A gunman shot and killed a Transportation Security Administration worker Friday at Los Angeles International Airport, federal authorities told NBC News. At least two other people, including a second TSA employee, were wounded, they said.

The authorities told NBC News that the gunman was in custody. It was not clear whether the shooter was among the wounded.

The shooting happened at a screening station where fliers show their IDs and boarding passes, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration. The agent was shot in the leg, he said.

Federal authorities told NBC News that the shooter appeared to have a rifle or other long gun.

Witnesses and police said that the shooting happened at about 12:20 p.m. ET at Terminal 3, which serves Virgin America, among other airlines. Nick Pugh told NBC Los Angeles that he was waiting in line for security on the upper mezzanine when he heard eight to 10 shots.

“We were just standing there in line and somebody started shooting,” he said. “Everyone dropped to the floor and started crawling along the ground, abandoning their suitcases.”

Brian Adamick, an accountant who was waiting for a flight to Chicago, said he saw a bunch of people running and one of them shouted, “There’s shooting!”

He said he boarded an evacuation bus minutes later and saw a TSA agent get on, limping.....

I was wondering how someone could get a rifle into an airport these days, until they said the shooter was a TSA agent.

It may not be so simple:

Shooter kills TSA agent at LAX

    KTLA
Gunman in critical condition, earlier reported dead
    By L.A. Times Staff

    What we know now:
    • Several others reported wounded
    • Officials say gunman was a ticketed passenger, acted alone
    • Flights delayed; thousands stranded in and around LAX

...Authorities said the gunman fired at several locations in Terminal 3 before police shot him. LAX police did not reveal his condition. Law enforcement sources said he was in critical condition.

The motive for the shooting was unclear. A federal law enforcement official said the gunman was a ticketed passenger entering the airport.

Los Angeles Police Department anti-terrorism officials were on the scene, but sources said they believed the suspect acted alone and was not tied to any known terrorist group.

At a news conference, the Los Angeles Fire Department said it treated seven people at the scene and transported six to local hospitals. The TSA said "multiple" agents were hurt in the incident.

At Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Lynne McCullough told reporters that the hospital was treating three adult males. One was in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, she said, and another was in fair condition with gunshot wounds. The third victim was in fair condition with unspecified injuries.

The gunshot wounds were in "a variety of areas" of their bodies, McCullough said.

"Our hearts go out to the families" of the victims, McCullough said.

....A law enforcement official said the shooting suspect is Paul Ciancia, 23, from New Jersey. He was wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a hand-written note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs," the official said, who was briefed at LAX on the investigation and requested anonymity because was he was not authorized to speak publicly.

A second law enforcement official confirmed the identity, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly......

Will LAX Shooting Be Exploited to Arm TSA Agents?

UPDATE: The media is now reporting that the gunman was not an off-duty TSA officer, which is a strange flip flop from earlier when law enforcement sources said that he was. This can now be exploited to justify further TSA abuse of power, which would have not been possible if the shooter had been a TSA agent.

The L.A. Times reports: “A federal law enforcement official said that the gunman was a ticketed passenger entering the airport. Officials don’t believe the gunman has ever worked for TSA. Law enforcement sources had earlier told The Times the gunman was a TSA employee.”

A shooting at LAX airport today which wounded several Transportation Security Administration screeners could be exploited as a justification to arm TSA agents, a plan that has likely been in the works for some time....

LAX Shooting Suspect from South Jersey: Police

The man suspected of trying to shoot his way past a security checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, killing a TSA officer and wounding two other people, is originally from South Jersey.

Paul Ciancia, 23, grew up in Pennsville, in Salem County, according to the town's police chief. He was wounded in a shootout with police and was taken into custody.

Ciancia's parents and brother still live in Pennsville, officials said.

The shooter’s brother got a text message from Ciancia Friday saying he was thinking about taking his life.

A law enforcement official told the AP that the suspect was wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a hand-written note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs."

The official was briefed at LAX on the investigation and requested anonymity because was he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Pennsville is pretty close to me. It's just north of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
