Christie leans whatever way he leans as long as it benefits him. What makes him so wildly popular here is that he came in with this brash attitude and stood up to the public unions, especially the teachers union. He claimed to lower taxes when in reality he just put in place that taxes can only go up 2% at a time. Whoopie. Taxes still go up. Spending hasn't gone down at all. He's really done nothing and can't really do anything because the state legislature is majority Democrat.

NJ is not nearly as Blue (In just D-R voting terms) as all the pundits, especially those who like Christie for 2016, want to portray it. Republican governors have won as often as not over the past 20 years. However, what is called a "Republican" in NJ is wildly different than what that word means in Indiana, Missouri, Florida, or anywhere else out here in flyover country.
A New Jersey Republican is closer to what is known as a 'Mainstream Democrat' in all those places than what they would call a 'Republican,' while a New Jersey Democrat is more like a British Socialist or German Social Democrat than like anything that would have a chance as a Democrat out here in the sticks.

Not true. Tom Kean was right of center. Kean actually won re-election in a bigger landslide than Christie and unlike Christie, Kean had no national aspirations so he focused on the state. Unfortunately, there wasn't a viable Republican candidate to succeed him and the state elected the biggest crook this side of Clinton in Jim Florio(I still see Florio Free in '93 stickers on light poles once in a while). Florio was so bad that Christine Whitman won the '93 election. She was pretty decent in her first go 'round but her 2nd term was as lame duck as you're going to get. She ended up being a horrible governor and her antics led to us electing the closet fag McGreevey who traded sexual favors for a high ranking spot. His ex-wife is a cutie though. She can shoot daggers with the best of them. Check her out on the stand during her divorce from Jim:
