The difference between pigs and people is that when they tell you you're cured it isn't a good thing.

That's kind of the point of the OP there. Pay, I say, pay attention son.

That's true especially in light of the national Spelling Bee's and Geography Bees and things of that nature they win on a regular basis.

My Grandfather, and every ancestor before him were home schooled. My Dad got to the third grade here in the Ozarks at the turn of the twentieth century because that was all there was. There are a lot of folks, whose ancestry is rural America, who had their education from parents, neighbors, and odd jobs, and life.

Sure beats a masters in basket weaving!

I'm not a huge fan of home-schooling, but my experience with it has been my cousin, who manipulated her mother into it because she didn't like getting out of bed early in the morning. Her mother (who is not my aunt, she is my uncle's widow) was not qualified to teach the kid.

I have seen it used to good effect with kids who have behavior issues in the classroom setting, with an online component.

Whatever the situation, I would never make rude jokes while volunteering in a place where schools or parents bring their kids to learn something.

Incidentally, my dad told me about the place you volunteer, because he visited it a few times when he first moved down there and was more mobile than he is now. He likes the manatees.

I'm glad he enjoyed his visits and we really like going there and helping out. At this time of year it's pretty slow and we have been getting a lot of people from Germany. They are on vacation but a lot of them own property here too and come down for months.

Regardless of political party, it's a good thing no one heard these two making their snide remarks. When a visitor is paying good money to come here the last thing they need is to be insulted by some all knowing dickhead.
May the FORCE be with you!

Thanks. They were stereotyping them as mini ignorant knuckle-draggers. That really ticked me off. Their eagerness to learn and the intelligent questions they asked really touched me. I've endured the snide political putdowns, but this was worse, making fun of the kids.

After teaching years ago in a urban school teeming with apprentice convicts, believe me I appreciate those home schooled kids. That aquarium is a place of joy and tranquility for me, just need to not hang around those people and go by the dolphin pool and hang out with the trainers. They're way nicer.

Tell me about it.There's a neighbor who has her master's degree and still teaches in the schools here. Poor thing can't write, has no concept of grammar, speliing, or things called paragraphs. My appointed task was to edit her writings for the newsletter without her noticing how much it had been changed.I finally foisted off the job to someone more patient.
