I think it's a legitimate term to describe someone who is afraid of gay people-I don't mean someone who is opposed to gay marriage, I mean someone who is afraid to talk to, sit by, work with, or be anywhere in proximity to a gay person. Or someone who is afraid (not annoyed-I hate excessive PDA from anyone, gay or straight) when he or she sees two men kiss or hold hands in public.
If you hate gay people, and are not afraid of them, then you are probably more anti gay than homophobic. The "phobic" part of the word indicates fear or extreme discomfort.
