The Washington Post's "Fact Checker" blog has given Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama three Pinocchios (significant factual error and/or obvious contradiction) for his bogus claim that one of his uncles helped liberate the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz. This is down from the four Pinocchios (whopper!) fact checker Michael Dobbs originally gave the junior senator from Illinois for his Memorial Day misstatement reported by NewsBusters just hours ago.

Obama has a hard time speaking off the cuff, and I think that was the problem here. He did have a great-uncle who indeed did liberate some folks in WWII, though not at Aushwitz. From a purely logical standpoint, I don't see the difference between that and what he said. He embarrassingly made a verbal gaffe, had a memory lapse, whatever, but clearly was talking about a true event.

Seems kinda silly to go after this instead of going after something a little more concrete, such as his views on trade, war, healthcare, and the like. Mccain doesn't misspeak nearly as much, and that's a credit to his many years in public service, but imagine that he said his cousin owned a bike store, when he really meant his nephew owned a rollerblade store. Wouldn't it be od dif the democrats all freaked out about such a silly error?

Some group will put together a TV ad with many of Obama's gaffes and the Dems will realize they have been blinded by this ill-prepared idiot.

Hillary keeps telling them but "no".......

    It's like Saturday Night Live, he's a not-ready-for-prime-time-player.

There certainly is a lot of material to work with there. Obama is not a very strong speaker. But how many of these ads can Mccain afford to produce? The media has no intention of talking about this. Bush = idiot was something that took a lot of news stories, punditry, etc, ridiculing everything Bush said stupidly. That's not going to happen here.

    He is the presumptive nominee

Yet he made three colossal blunders

    1. Auschwitz is not in Germany, it is in Poland. Buchenwald is in Thuringia, near Weimar.
    2. The camp in question was liberated by Russia, not by any American troops
    3. Buchenwald was liberated on 11 April 1945 by elements of the 83rd AND the 89th Division. The 89th liberated Ohrdruf (a Buchenwald subcamp)

He also left out the 4th and 6th Armoured Divisions..the 89th was one of several units and was NOT the only one there as he implies

Regardless of where it was, the fact remains that he failed to fact check his own speech.

    Idiot.
