For the first time in the history of college sports, athletes are asking to be represented by a labor union, taking formal steps on Tuesday to begin the process of being recognized as employees.

Ramogi Huma, president of the National College Players Association, filed a petition in Chicago on behalf of football players at Northwestern University, submitting the form at the regional office of the National Labor Relations Board.

Backed by the United Steelworkers union, Huma also filed union cards signed by an undisclosed number of Northwestern players with the NLRB -- the federal statutory body that recognizes groups that seek collective bargaining rights.

This is about as stupid as it gets. Im sure the school can find other kids who are good trading playing a game for free school.

At Northwestern ? Nah, not there. Ohio State maybe but Northwestern not really. Its silly of course as they are not "labor" nor is there anything to collectively bargain for either with the school or the NCAA.

I'm all for it. Of course if this does happen and the players start getting paid then the schools should demand payment for attending their school. G'bye free scholarship. And their rate of pay would just happen to coincide to how much it costs to attend that school. Northwestern charges around $60K. Let's see if these primadonnas have what it takes to earn their way through college like everyone else.

U of M Stadium packs in 106,000+ every Saturday the Wolverines play at home bringing in millions of dollars. People aren't paying up to 500 a seat to watch the grass grow.
One could argue that many of the players are already getting "paid" if they are getting a full ride worth 25 to 50K per year.

The only thing for certain is that the lawyers on both sides will make out like bandits.

The National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday ruled college athletes are considered employees, a decision that moves Northwestern University football players a step closer to forming the nation's first college athletes' union.

End of college sports as we know it.

I'd tell these idiots at Northwestern they have two choices.

    a) go find another place to play football because we're dropping the program

    b) go ahead and have your union, but everything that was provided for you free of charge before you now have to pay for with your new "professional" status.
