Atlanta (CNN) -- The coming hours will tell the story across the Southeast. But no one knows yet if the long-anticipated winter storm will live up to the hype.

Families are snug in their homes after baring grocery store shelves. Road crews are staged along nearly empty highways, and electric companies are ready to spring into action when power lines go down. Thousands of flights have been canceled.

    But will it be enough?

National Weather Service forecasters say this winter storm -- packed with sleet, snow, rain and especially ice -- is different. They call it a potentially "catastrophic event."

Sun is shining here in the DC area, streets are dry, but we're supposed to get 6-9"
starting around dinnertime and continuing overnight and into tomorrow.

Me thinks you are probably goiing to get more than that. I live just 4 hours south of you in the heart of this. They are predicting anywhere from 12 - 14 here.

As long as the snowblower fires up and the wine supply holds out (~20 cases in the cellar right now) we'll be ok. :)

I've been brewing my own beer for several years now. 80 bottles of Homebrew for me on hand. Only about 6 bottles of wine.

We had 50 F and over 8 hours of a big glowing ball in the sky instead of clouds and drizzle.
It's not how old you are, it's how you got here.
It's been a long road and not all of it was paved.
Live every day as if it were your last, because one of these days, it will be.
