#1 Video: Baby M and the Question of Surrogacy
04-16-2014, 05:18 PM
I didn't have time to watch the whole thing, but I remember that case and what a mess it was at the time.
The advice given these days regarding surrogate mothers is to stick within the family network. When my sister had trouble getting pregnant, I told her that if her doctor told her not to try anymore, that I would be a surrogate for her. Only for her, not for my SIL. Once she had one baby, that offer was off the table, but if she had not been able to have one I would have been willing to do that for her.
They also advise that the surrogate already have at least one of her own kids. I could have given a baby up to my sister, but not to a stranger. Even with that, I'm sure it still would have been difficult to give up a baby after pregnancy, labor, and all.
