Arizona VA boss accused of covering up veterans' deaths linked to previous scandal

A Veterans Affairs official accused of keeping double books to hide the fact that dozens of veterans died awaiting care previously ran a Washington state VA facility that allegedly fudge suicide numbers, FoxNews.com has learned.

Sharon Helman, director of the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system, is accused with other management officials of keeping a fake waiting list that made it appear sick veterans were being treated in a timely manner -- while hiding the real list that showed up to 1,600 sick veterans were waiting months to see a physician. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, said investigators have evidence that two sets of records were kept by the facility to conceal the lengthy delays in care.

At least 40 veterans on the secret list allegedly died while waiting for appointments, prompting congressional committees to launch investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

3 Phoenix VA officials placed on leave amid scandal
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014...cmp=latestnews

Three officials at the Phoenix Veterans Affair center where key data was allegedly concealed while dozens of veterans died waiting for care have been placed on leave, the Department of Veterans Affairs said Thursday.

Phoenix VA Health Care System Director Sharon Helman, Associate Director Lance Robinson and a third employee, whose name was not immediately released, were placed on leave as authorities probe allegations that VA officials kept a fake waiting list that made it appear sick veterans were being treated in a timely manner – while hiding the real list that showed up to 1,600 sick veterans were waiting months to see a physician.

“We take these allegations very seriously,” Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki said in a statement released late Thursday afternoon. “We believe it is important to allow an independent, objective review to proceed. These allegations, if true, are absolutely unacceptable and if the Inspector General’s investigation substantiates these claims, swift and appropriate action will be taken.”
That is horrible. Time to bring back accountability.

Senators call for VA secretary's resignation amid mounting scandals
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014...cmp=latestnews

Two U.S. senators called Tuesday for VA Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign over a string of scandals involving the treatment of U.S. servicemembers, with one demanding an overhaul "from top to bottom" at the agency.

Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., issued a call Tuesday morning for Shinseki to resign on the Senate floor, a day after the American Legion demanded Shinseki's resignation, along with that of other top VA officials. Some influential lawmakers and groups, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, have been reluctant to go that far, but Moran echoed the American Legion in saying VA leadership needs to change.

"It's clear that accountability at VA is absent, oversight doesn't mean much," Moran, a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, said on the floor. "There's a difference in wanting change and leading it to happen. Today I am demanding accountability and true transformation within the VA system in its culture from top to bottom and all across the country. Secretary Shinseki seemingly is unwilling or unable to do so, and change must be made at the top.
    The buck stops here.

Eric Holder: No Plans at DOJ to Investigate Secret Waiting Lists and Veteran Deaths at VA Hospitals
    http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/...ls_792719.html

Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday that the Department of Justice doesn't have any plans to investigate allegations that veterans placed on secret waiting lists at VA hospitals died while waiting for care.

"Well, obviously these reports if they're true are unacceptable, and the allegations are being taken very seriously by the administration. But I don't have any announcements at this time with regard to anything that the Justice Department is doing," Holder told reporters at a press conference.

"This is something on our radar screen at this point, but there is an investigation being done by the [VA] inspector general, and we'll see what happens as a result of that inquiry and other information that comes to light in some form or fashion," Holder added.
Eric Holder is the nation's top law enforcement officer. This should be investigated for criminal charges.

That means the administration is dirty in this scandal too.
