This ought to be interesting. The school doesn't want to hire homosexuals or have GLBT activities on campus on a religious basis. They are applying for a religious exemption. Wonder what SCOTUS would say. In the meantime, the agency that accredits the school has decided to "review" it. If the agency decides to pull the accreditation, that could leave the college unaccredited. In effect, this could destroy the school.

Accreditor Will Review Christian College in Gay-Rights Controversy...

Gordon College’s accrediting agency has put it under review as the Christian institution petitions the federal government to provide it with a religious exemption to a ban on anti-gay discrimination, The Boston Globe reports.

The Massachusetts college has been the target of protest by students, faculty and staff members, and even the town of Salem, Mass., after D. Michael Lindsay, Gordon’s president, issued a statement on Monday defending a letter in which he asked the federal government for an exemption to a forthcoming ban on anti-gay discrimination among federal contractors. Mr. Lindsay joined 13 other religious leaders in signing the letter.

Barbara E. Brittingham, director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges’ Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, said the accreditor would review whether the college’s stance violates accreditation standards. Members of the commission are scheduled to discuss the controversy at a September meeting

Apparently the school has become a pariah in Massachusetts.

The region’s higher education accrediting agency will review whether its standards are being violated by Gordon College after the Christian school’s public opposition to hiring protections for gays and lesbians shed light on its longstanding policies prohibiting gay activities among students, faculty, and staff.

While it is not unusual for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges’ Commission on Institutions of Higher Education to review schools in light of news reports and other “unsolicited information,” the body has never dealt with a case involving potential sexual orientation-related discrimination, said the commission’s director, Barbara E. Brittingham

“There’s considerable publicity about the whole issue, and it’s been getting a lot of attention,” Brittingham said in a phone interview Friday. “It’s a matter of looking at the information we have and deciding if the institution is meeting our standards.”

......Revoking accreditation is a “very drastic” and rare step, Brittingham said. The US Education Department typically pulls federal financial aid funding from schools that lose accreditation.

The Boston Business Journal first reported Thursday night about the accrediting agency’s plan to review the Gordon controversy.

Last week, Gordon president D. Michael Lindsay was among 14 religious leaders who wrote to the White House requesting an exemption to an upcoming executive order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating in their hiring based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

The letter upset dozens of students and faculty at the college in Wenham and alumni, including more than 100 who signed a letter to the White House in support of the rules banning discrimination. An online petition calling for Lindsay to reverse the college’s position had received more than 3,300 signatures by Friday.

Lindsay defended his position in a statement posted to the school’s website Monday, saying his request for an exemption is about supporting religious freedom.

But the fallout continued through the week.

Salem officials declared Wednesday that they will end a contract allowing Gordon College to use the city-owned Old Town Hall because Lindsay’s stance and the school’s policies violate a municipal ordinance prohibiting Salem from contracting with entities that discriminate.

Mayor Kimberley Driscoll and other Salem leaders, including Michael Alexander, president of Lasell College in Newton, have sharply criticized Gordon over the issue.

“The clear message is that homosexuals are not worthy of employment, or even recognition of their existence, in the Gordon community,” Alexander wrote in a statement to the Globe this week. “It is a slap in the face of every gay and lesbian person, particularly every gay and lesbian Christian, that says you are somehow less of a human being, you do not belong in the embrace of God’s merciful arms.”

Gordon spokesman Rick Sweeney said Friday that Lindsay was not available to comment, but that college administrators “look forward to the meeting in September and continuing our longstanding relationship with NEASC.”

Brittingham said that she has spoken with Lindsay and that he has agreed to help provide the accrediting agency with information it will want to review at its September meeting.

“The president has been very forthcoming in providing information, and that is always helpful,” she said.....

It's interesting that "civil rights" is now about where you put your body parts.

    I think it's time for two USA's.

Let the left have all their socialist utopia.

They would probably implode in about ten years.
Obama isn't the problem. The problem is an electorate that would vote a man like him into office.

Gordon College is part of a larger movement.

Anti-Bias Rules vs. a Conservative Christian College

The news media took little notice when 14 organizations and religious leaders, including Rick Warren, Christianity Today and Catholic Charities, sent a letter to President Obama last week seeking religious exemptions from his forthcoming executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation. But the Boston Globe and gay activists noticed the name of D. Michael Lindsay as one of the signers, and sounded an alarm. Lindsay is president of Gordon College, a small Christian institution near Boston with behavioral standards forbidding all sex outside of marriage including “homosexual practice.” It also forbids profanity, drunkenness, dishonesty, use of illegal drugs and tobacco, and mandates respect for the Sabbath.

As Lindsay tells it, his signing of the letter was somewhat perfunctory, largely a show of support for religious exemptions in general—his college has had a religious exemption since 2002 under an executive order from President Bush, he cites a similar exemption is in the ENDA bill , and, he insists, Gordon doesn’t discriminate. But after protests, on campus and off, Lindsay put out a statement saying this: “Signing the letter was in keeping with our decades-old conviction that, as an explicitly Christian institution, Gordon should set the conduct expectations for members of our community…Be assured that nothing has changed in our position regarding admission or employment. We have never barred categories of individuals from our campus and have no intention to do so now.”

The content and wording of President Obama’s planned executive order are still unknown, but the issue of religious liberty versus anti-discrimination rules is very familiar. In many such campus confrontations, gay activists have managed to defund or ban Christian groups by citing rules that require the groups to be open to non-Christian or even anti-Christian student leadership. Twenty years ago, few realized that apparently anodyne anti-bias rules could be used as effective political weapons against traditional church groups. Now they do.

It's completely cheapened what the Civil Rights struggle was actually about.

LOL! They don't care about that now...look at how they're treating the situation on the border. It wouldn't stop them from invading the red states and demanding their rights.
