    "What a Dumb Sheeeet !"

The St. Olaf (Northfield, Minn.) professor who, in a well-read Huffington Post item, recounted tearing down McCain campaign signs has resigned.

Per the Northfield News, it appears that Philip Busse was forced out.

St. Olaf spokesman David Gonnerman issued the following statement Monday afternoon:

"The St. Olaf College administration first learned of Phil Busse's self-admitted theft and destruction of campaign signs on the morning of Oct. 31 as a result of his posting on the Internet.

"The St. Olaf administration immediately referred the matter to local law enforcement authorities and commenced an investigation of its own.

"Mr. Busse has tendered his resignation and is no longer affiliated with St. Olaf College.

Busse has been charged with misdemeanor theft.http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonath...ard_signs.html

Former Portland mayoral candidate Phil Busse resigns after essay on stealing McCain signs

Phil Busse, the former Portland mayoral candidate and former managing editor of the Portland Mercury, resigned from his visiting professorship at a Minnesota college after admitting he stole campaign signs for John McCain.

Busse left his one-semester job at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN after the school talked to him about his Oct. 30th posting, "Confessions of a Lawn Sign Stealer" on the Huffington Post, a political Web site. Busse taught an undergraduate class during fall semester called "introductory media studies."

Busse acknowledged in an Oct. 30th post that he pulled out eight McCain lawn signs from Highway 19 in southeast Minnesota.

"Sure, I understand that stealing a sign will not change anyone's mind, and, most likely, will only embolden McCain supporters," the post read.

"Yanking out the signs and running like a scared rabbit back to my idling car was one of the signle-most exhilarating and empowering political acts I have ever done."

Busse was charged with misdemeanor theft by the Rice County Sheriff. He faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. His first court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 19th in Rice County District Court, said Sgt. Dave Stensrud with the Rice County Sheriff's Department.

St. Olaf spokesman Steve Blodgett said he didn't have any contact information for Busse, and Portland Mercury editor Amy Ruiz couldn't be reached Tuesday afternoon.

"It was startling and I think there was overwhelming disbelief that a faculty member who served as a role model to students would engage in this," Blodgett said. "There's a somber mood around here."

What an idiot. Yesterday my office mate witnessed someone stealing McCain signs. She tried to stop them and they almost ran her down as they took off. She got the license plate.

Is an election really worth your job and the potential of a criminal record?
