    1835 - In Brazoria, Holland Lodge No. 36 met for the first time. It was the first Masonic lodge in Texas.

    1836 - Stephen F. Austin died. He was the founder of Anglo-American Texas and is known as the Father of Texas.

    1839 - Austin was incorporated into a city. At the time the city had 856 citizens.

    1875 - Jim Taylor and two companions were killed by a Cuero posse. This brought the end to the Sutton-Taylor feud, one of the most notorious Reconstruction-era feuds.

    1859 - Congregation Beth Israel was chartered as teh Hebrew Congregation of the City of Houston. It is the oldest Jewish place of worship in Texas.

    1926 - On the W.E. Connell Ranch, the first producing oil well in Ector County was brought in.

    1931 - A temporary Texas Centennial Commission was appointed to prepare for the 1936 centennial celebration of Texas’ independence from Mexico.

    1845 - Texas was admitted to the United States as the 28th state after the "Joint Resolution for the Admission of the State of Texas into the Union" went into effect. The former Republic lasted nine years before voting for annexation.

    1860 - Artist Frank Reaugh was born in Illinois. He is best known for his paintings depicting ranching life in Texas.

    1909 - In Dallas, the Texas Folklore Society was founded.

    1835 - A decree was issued by General Santa Anna stating that all foreigners taking up arms against the Mexican government would be treated as pirates and shot.

    1880 - In Jefferson, TX, Abraham Rothschild was acquitted of murder in the infamous "Diamond Bessie" case.

    1938 - San Antonio mayor Charles K. Quin was indicted for misapplication of funds.

    1889 - East Dallas officially became part of Dallas.

    1937 - The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge was established.

    1976 - The Hoblitzelle Foundation gave the Majestic Theatre to the city of Dallas.

    1980 - In Austin, Armidillo World Headquarters closed.

    1987 - The Houston Astrodome hosted the last Bluebonnet Bowl game. The game had been used to raise funds for charitable organizations in Harris County since 1959.

    1985 - Ricky Nelson and six others died in an airplane crash near DeKalb, TX. A fire had broken out on the plane.
