    1540 - An expedition led by Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado left Culiacán in Mexico in search of the Seven Cities of Cíbola.

    1689 - On the Texas coast, Spanish explorer Alonso León discovered the ruins of a French settlement, Fort St. Louis.

    1836 - At San Jacinto, Santa Anna was captured by the Texan army. He reluctantly agreed to terms that required Mexican soldiers to evacuate Texas.

    1873 - The Texas state legislature repealed the law that had authorized the State Police.

    1897 - Sarah Seelye became a member of the McClellan Post, Grand Army of the Republic, in Houston. She was the only woman in history to have served in the Union army.

    1967 - Randy Matson set a new world record with a shot put toss of 71 feet, and 5 1/2 inches in College Station, TX.

    2011 - In Arlington, TX, the Texas Giant reopened to the public as part of the Six Flags Over Texas 50th anniversary celebration.

    1892 - A group of Fort Worth women received a Texas charter establishing the Fort Worth Public Library Association. A part of the stated purpose was "the accumulation of paintings and artistic work of every character for the enjoyment and cultivation of our people." The resulting gallery, after several name changes, became the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in 1987.

    1936 - Musician Roy Orbison was born in Vernon, TX.

    1942 - In Texas, Kenedy Alien Detention Camp began receiving prisoners. It housed more than 3,500 Japanese, German and other foreign nationals during WWII.

    1962 - Duane Eddy performed "Deep in the Heart of Texas" on "American Bandstand."

    1678 - Pedro de Aguirre was born. He was a captain in the Spanish army and escorted an expedition into Texas that named the San Antonio de Padua river.

    1998 - The reunion movie "Dallas: War of the Ewings" aired on CBS.

    1838 - The United States and the Republic of Texas signed the Convention of Limits, which recognized Texas claims to disputed territory in Red River County (the present Bowie, Red River, Franklin, Titus, Morris, and Cass counties). The agreement also set the eastern boundary of Texas as the west bank of the Sabine River.

    1846 - The Mexican-American War ignited as a result of disputes over claims to Texas boundaries. The outcome of the war fixed Texas' southern boundary at the Rio Grande River.

    2002 - U.S. President George W. Bush and Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah met in Crawford, TX.

    2013 - The George W. Bush Presidential Center was dedicated on the campus of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, TX.

    2013 - U.S. President Barack Obama visited West, TX, in the aftermath of a fertilizer plant explosion on April 17.

    1923 - Cleto Rodriguez was born. He was a native Texan from San Marcos who became the first Mexican American GI to win the Medal of Honor in the South Pacific in WWII.

    1968 - Texan PFC Milton Lee earned the Medal of Honor for heroism for overrunning an enemy positions and providing covering fire for his platoon during the Vietnam War. He died that day from the wounds he had suffered. President Nixon presented the medal to his grandmother on April 7, 1970.

    1895 - The final issue of the weekly newspaper Rolling Stone appeared. It was published in Austin, TX, by William Sydney Porter (a.k.a. O. Henry).

    1907 - In Hemming, TX, seven people were killed by a tornado. All but one of the town's buildings were destroyed.

    1950 - The Barker Texas History Center opened on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The Barker Center was later renamed the Eugene C. Barker Texas History Collection.

    1983 - Nolan Ryan (Houston Astros) broke a 55-year-old major league baseball record when he struck out the 3,509th batter of his career.

    2015 - Josh Hamilton was officially traded back to the Texas Rangers from the Los Angeles Angels of Aneheim for cash or a player to be named later.
