    1954 - Hernández v. the State of Texas was brought before the Supreme Court, which reversed the murder conviction of Pete Hernández because no Hispanics had served on the jury.

    2001 - The Texas Board of Criminal Justice released a review of the escape of the "Texas 7." It stated that prison staff missed critical opportunities to prevent the escape by ignoring a fire alarm, not reporting unsupervised inmates and not demanding proper identification from inmates.

    1861 - Unionist editor John W. Barrett published the Marshall Harrison Flag for the last time.

    1884 - Mary Louise "Texas" Guinan, the notorious night club performer and star of Broadway and Hollywood, was born in Waco, Texas.

    1841 - The Franco-Texian Bill, a short-lived bill authorizing the formation of a French-Texan immigration company, was introduced in the Texas Congress. The bill called for the introduction of 8,000 immigrant families to occupy three million acres of the Republic of Texas. The bill passed the House, but was never presented to the Senate. The sponsors believed that it could not pass over an expected veto by acting president David G. Burnet.

    1886 - Editor Simeon Newman closed the El Paso Lone Star.

    1888 - Several states were hit by what became known as the "Schoolchildren's Blizzard." The Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas and Texas combined for 235 deaths.

    1983 - In Dallas, TX, President Reagan addressed the 64th annual American Farm Bureau Federation at the Dallas Convention Center.

    1983 - In Dallas, TX, President Reagan visited the North Texas Food Bank.

    1871 - José Antonio Navarro died. He was a leading Mexican participant in the Texas Revolution and one of three Mexican signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

    1939 - Legendary Big Thicket outlaw Thomas "Red" Jefferson Golemon was arrested for the first time.

    1840 - Edwin Waller was elected as the first mayor of Austin.

    1974 - The airport now known as Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport officially opened.

    1997 - Willie Lewis died. He was a renowned black jazz clarinetist and bandleader. He was born in Cleburne, Texas, and grew up in Dallas.

    1836 - Wiliam McDowell was sworn into the Texas Army. He rode to San Antonio with David Crockett and later died in the battle of the Alamo.

    1996 - Fox aired the San Francisco 49er/Dallas Cowboy NFC championship game. The game pulled a 34.2/57 Nielsen rating.

    2003 - In Dallas, Dwayne Goodrich (Dallas Cowboys) was charged with two counts of manslaughter and was released after posting a $50,000 bond. The charges stemmed from Goodrich's involvement in a hit-and-run accident that killed two people.

    1841 - The initial Houston and Austin Turnpike Company was chartered. The plan was to lay out a road from Austin to Houston.

    1939 - In Austin, TX, the Texas Memorial Museum officially opened.

    1978 - The Super Bowl was played indoors for the first time. The game was played at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Denver Broncos 27-10.

    You know, we had fires in San Diego (2007) and a lot of our east county residents ended up in Qualcomm stadium. Not only was it not a hell hole: it was nice enough that housewives felt comfortable going up there dropping off canned goods and paper products.

    Same for the dome in Houston. Folks from all walks of the city showed up with everything from prepared casseroles to cases of toilet paper.
