Like many other Florida politicians, Gov. Charlie Crist has long criticized proposals to allow oil drilling off the state's gulf coast.

But with motorists paying $4 for a gallon of gas --- and Republican presidential candidate John McCain signaling he is open to more drilling --- Crist is rethinking his position.

Crist said today he thinks the state should study the possibility of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. He pointed to gasoline prices that have "gone through the roof'' and said Florida families are suffering.

"We have to be in tune with what's happening in our country,'' Crist said at the Capitol.

He said the state would have to look at a number of factors, such as whether beaches and the environment could be protected and where the drilling would take place.

McCain said this week he would support lifting a federal moratorium and allow states to decide whether to permit exploration. Crist said his new approach is unrelated to speculation that McCain is considering him as a vice-presidential nominee.

I will like to see gas go up a little bit more. If people get fed up with their chickenshit politicians like Crist, all Governors on the east and west coast and liberals, maybe drilling will be allowed. As it stands, the states other than LA, TX & MS are the only states that are allow to drill by law off their coast.

I would like to ask Crist, what about the beaches & environment of these three states. WTF. The Governor will be crying if the Chinese have an oil spill and it hits their coast or another bad hurricane that shuts down production in the Gulf. After Katrina & Rita ripped thru the Gulf, there was not one drop of oil spilled.

What I don't like is the politics of decision making. These elected representatives need to stop pandering to political populism and start making decisions on what is right.

I do like the idea of them finally reversing bad decisions and doing the sometimes hard right in spite of political opposition.

Calling them hypocrites is counter productive if the reversal was in the right direction as the attack may discourage others from doing the same.
